2010 USAPL National Report
First and foremost Team MANA Wahine would like to thank everyone for supporting us in our first nationals. This event is the largest women's only lifting event in the nation. There were a 114 lifters ranging in age from 15-70 over the course of two days!!!
Regretfully, Donna and I bombed in the bench.
Jenna Neeley went 5 for 9 and gave us all quite a panic in the bench press, but came through strong and was able to lockout her opener on her third try. She finished the day with a PR 336 pull @ 123 and matched her USPF total of 804, but only needing 5 attempts to do it this time. One day this girl will hit her true total and I assure you it will be huge!
(Jenna don't make me a liar...grrrr)
Ren "lil sumo" Yamashita was the highlight of day by going 8 for 9 with PR's across the board. After she crushed her opening squat of 281 the meet announcer said, "OMG, I thought the bar was going to fly off of her back!" That set the tone for the rest of her meet. She went on to PR with a deep 325 on her third and then became an official 200+ bencher nailing 203 on her third BP. She finished up with a tough 319 pull and got a 22lb PR total with 848 @ 114!!!
She is only 20 years old people!!!
Sky's the limit for Ren. She is an amazing athlete and fierce competitor. She always gives me credit for her success, but the reality is that everyday she teaches me more than I could ever teach her...as an educator this is usually the case. It goes without saying that I'm very proud of her and it's been amazing to see her growth in such a short period of time.
I always have a story to share after every meet so here it is. After I bombed I walked to the bathroom, had a brief thought of hanging up my squat shoes, and ran into Ruth Welding. Ruth Welding has been competing in the ADFPA/USAPL nationals since 1979 having only missed two events due to injury. I took the opportunity to introduce myself and wished her well in her lifting. She paused and in what seemed like an eternity, but was really just a second, she said with tears in her eyes, "I can't lift anymore because of physical reasons". As I walked back to the warm up area to gather up my things I felt selfish. Like my brief thought of quitting had just disgraced the women who had come before me. Women, like Ruth, who have dedicated countless years of effort to bring women's powerlifting to such a huge platform.
Ruth will probably never know how influential that 20 second conversation was to me. I will never forget it.
It changed everything!
Redemption...
